A huge part of X-Men is what everyone remembers best about superheroes: The Powers! The powered characters in the X-Men franchise are almost always mutated in some way. This mutation comes from the X-Gene, and can manifest in all sorts of ways. Some characters have telepathy, others can fly, some even have physical mutations like a tail or wings. The possibilities for mutations are truly endless. But how do you write a good power? The focus of this guide will help you get a clear understanding of how to write and app powers. Whether it's a canon or original character, the mutation will be a huge part of their day to day lives, and it makes writing so much easier and more enjoyable when you really understand your character.

To really get the meat of your power, it's good to look at three simple questions to get the ball rolling.

What your mutant is able to do means what parts of their powers they can control at the time of their application being submitted. Keep in mind that OC characters have to be less powerful than a canon character with a similar mutation. And any direct copies of canon powers will not be accepted. Also remember your character's age and training when writing their abilities. A child usually has less control over their power than an adult. When writing what your character can do, it's good to think about the specifics.

Range – How far does your character's power stretch? Can a telepath read the mind of someone halfway around the world, or only those in the same room as her? And how much of this can they do at once? How fast does your speedster run, or how many tons can your super strong character lift? It's all in the little details.

Endurance – How long is your character able to use their power for? If they've got a lot of endurance, do they have to sacrifice their more powerful attacks to avoid tiring? Can they use more than one facet of their mutation at once? For example, maybe someone is able to turn into a cat, and also control all feline creatures. Would this be easier or harder for them in cat form?

Ability – Exactly how powerful is your character? How destructive are their laser beams, or how much can a telepathic character influence a person's thoughts? Are they powerful but inaccurate with aiming, or vice versa? Maybe they have a defensive power set. After all, there's nothing wrong with bones that don't break and skin that won't cut. The word for the application is neuro.

What your mutant's potential for the future is should also be taken into consideration. Look at the three categories of Range, Endurance, and Ability. Will your mutant gain a new power similar to their others, or will they simply improve on what they are already able to do? What would the end result be when they reach their maximum potential? Some characters have already developed their powers as much as is possible, and so won't have any more room to grow.

And finally, what is your mutant weak against? It's important to outline the details of a character's weaknesses. After all, what's Superman without his kryptonite? Weaknesses can define a character almost as much as their strengths do. A perfect character is a boring one, so remember that weaknesses make roleplay more interesting. There isn't much that can happen when your character is unbeatable, but a character with weakness has a lot of room to grow, to surprise, and to be a really great character. If you're stuck on weaknesses, think about what the limits to their mutation is. And think about what other mutations would be able to counter it? Elements are usually weak against other elements. Sometimes siblings will not be able to cause damage to a sibling with the same or similar powers (Scott and Alex Summers, the Frost Sisters).

- A character with lame powers doesn't necessarily make them a lame character. Not everyone can be all-powerful, and you never know when a power that seems dumb in theory comes in handy in practice.
- Think about how science might fit in with your powers. What generates the heat that sets your character's body on fire when he's angry? Or what's really happening when a mutant is breathing underwater? Is are their lungs working like gills?
- Try do to some training threading. Your character will grow and expand much more quickly if they learn how to.
