Charles Xavier first formed his school, and eventually the X-Men, for the purpose of promoting the peaceful affirmation of mutant rights, of mediating the co-existence of mutants and mutants, and of protecting society from antagonistic mutants. To achieve this, he founded Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, to teach mutants to explore and control their powers. The school's first group of students are the original X-Men. Xavier's students considered him a visionary and often refer to their mission as "Xavier's dream". Their goal is to have mutants and humans coexist as equals.

Under a cloud of increasing anti-mutant sentiment, the late Professor Xavier created a haven at his family's Westchester Salem Center estate. Here, he trained young mutants to use their powers for the benefit of humanity and to prove that mutants could be heroes. Since then, the mutant haven's location was revealed after an attack decimated the main structure but was rebuilt and still stands to this day. Even now, mutants from far and wide come to the school, considering it to be a place of safety and solace.

Currently, Emma Frost and Scott Summers are sharing the top administrative role as headmistress and headmaster, respectively.
